Wombat Rise Sanctuary, Sandleton, South Australia

Wombat Rise Sanctuary is is a privately owned wildlife sanctuary. It is located on Heritage listed land that has been designated a sanctuary by The National Parks and Wildlife Service and is officially known as Red Creek Sanctuary. It is open to anyone, anytime, but the best time of day to visit is about an hour before sunset as the majority of Australian mammal species are nocturnal.

The Sanctuary started life in February 1984 when the then owners moved from the suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia onto a small acreage (2.5 acres) in the Adelaide Hills.

Due to circumstances beyond their control the Sanctuary was moved to its present location, a much larger property (325acres), in the late nineties, but still kept its heavy involvement with the rescue of injured and orphaned native wildlife.

We have the distinction of having the first recorded captive breeding of the Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons) in South Australia.

No grant or Government assistance is available to keep the Sanctuary going and it is run on a purely voluntary basis.
